             Fourth Annual Exhibit
                 June 13 - June 27, 2010

My life has recently been a series of art events. The Connecticut
River Valley Artists is a group from CT and MA that meets once
a month for lively discussion and dinner. Each year we put on a
show and the opening for this year was last Sunday. We are a very
eclectic group who always manage to have a good time. If you are
in Somers, CT during the next two weeks, stop in and see the show
at Piedmont Hall.

My husband has produced an eighty page book about the artists,
their paintings and experiences in Italy for the show. The book cover,
shown above, is also titled "Symphonies of Italy". The book can be

Desert Botanical Garden

My husband, Michael, flew out to Scottsdale for a long weekend.
We rented a car and spent part of Saturday and Sunday at the
Desert Botanical Garden in Scottsdale. What a magical place!
The Phoenix area has received more than normal spring rainfall
and, thus, many of the cacti were in bloom. On Sunday, I took my
painting gear and did a painting.

While there was plenty of parking and little traffic in downtown
Scottsdale, the gardens were packed - even on Easter Sunday.

Charter Oak Tree

The Charter Oak painting in my studio.

Thought I would induldge you in a bit of history - Connecticut's and mine. A little more than
a year ago I finished the painting you see on the right. It was commissioned by a young couple,
soon to be married as a wedding present to each other. It is 5' x 6' and was displayed at their
wedding reception. It took several months to complete the research and paint.
That's my history.

The significance and history of this tree is much greater. The Charter Oak was an unusually
large white oak tree growing in Hartford from around the 12th or 13th century. It was 21 feet
around near the base before it was felled by lightening in 1856.

The Charter Oak is a symbol of Connecticut's colonial independence. It was here that
Connecticut's charter was hidden when the envoy from King James II came to Hartford to
revoke it. An image of the tree is on the back side of the Connecticut quarter. It was painted
by several prominent America artists including Charles Dewolf Brownell (four times),
Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church. The tree remains a symbol of Connecticut's strength
and independence.

                       The Frank Reilly Method Seminar

Associated with the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists - Faces of Winter Show
was a two day seminar entitled The Frank Reilly Method and Beyond. Frank Reilly
was one of America's artists who defined The Golden Age of Illustration. Mr. Reilly
succeeded George Bridgeman at the Art Students League in New York City where he
would continue teaching for thirty-five years. He was noted for his knowledge of science
and art and the styles of the great masters of the past. Many of the presenters at this
two-day seminar were intimately acquainted with Mr. Reilly's methods and teaching style.
They related some of the techiniques he taught, but overall they conveyed what a wonderful
teacher and knowledgeable artist he had been.

To learn more about Frank Reilly go to:

To find out more about the seminar, go to:

       Sandra and Frank Covino

The highlight of the seminar, for me, was meeting and talking to Frank Covino.
My father is also an artist and he took his first lessons from Frank. My father
told me many stories of his experiences and wanted me to also take lessons
from him, but in my youth I wasn't inclined towards fine art. My goal was to be
an illustrator. At dinner Friday evening, I sat next to Frank and we had a wonderful
discussion continuing his presentation about the science behind art.

                     Faces of Winter 2010

University of Connecticut - Stamford Campus
                                     February 5 - March 4

The Friday opening was a huge success - people
wall-to-wall. Below is my entry for this winter's
show. John Howard Sanden and Robert Andersen.
gave me a very positive critique highlighting
the portrait's painterlyness.

Thanks to all who worked so hard to put this
show together.

Italy Painting Trip - 2009

Our group of two Italian and eight American artists.

This past September, I led a group of artists to paint for two weeks just outside of Florence, Italy. The trip was unique because all of us artists were professionals and able to work on our own venues. Our home base was Residenza del Palmerino. Our daily painting routine offered unlimited possibilities as we were invited to paint in neighboring villas and in the gardens of Villa Peyron and Villa la Pietra, owned by New York University. We also made a one-day side trip to Chianti wine country.

Our trip wound down with an art show put on by our hosts at Palmerino attended by over sixty people with the purchase of several of our artworks. Several of the works were purchased by Ffast (Fondazione Fremantle per Artisti Stranieri in Toscana) for the emerging art museum at Villa Peyron. The next day we took part in the grape harvest at Palmerino followed by an outdoor feast for all the participants.

I will be elaborating, in future posts, on places and events mentioned in this post. Should you be interested in the 2010 trip being planned for next September, please email me for more information. If you feel you would like instruction on this trip, I am available. From past experience, I have found that each trip takes on its own character. That is what makes it interesting and fun.
